Language skills and verification

To ensure the success of your studies abroad, you must generally be fairly fluent in the language of the host country. You don't have to be perfect, but still, you should be able to understand the lectures and express yourself both orally and in writing on the topics relevant to your course. More and more lectures are being presented in the English language, so that should be of help to you in following and understanding the class, while allowing you, in parallel, to improve your host country language skills. Nevertheless, we recommend you start a language training course at the start of your semester abroad or shortly before your departure. As a rule, many of the partner schools offer intensive preparatory classes. It is often necessary to verify your language abilities in the context of the exchange and scholarship programmes (except Socrates/Erasmus programmes).

Language courses at TU Kaiserslautern

If you do not have the requisite foreign language skills, do not delay in signing up for a language course either in Germany or abroad and take advantage of every chance (e.g., tandem learning) to acquire the necessary fluency. The non-profit VBK Association (Völkerverständigung, Kultur und Bildung) offers language training courses during the semester at TU Kaiserslautern.

TOEFL - Test

American universities in particular, have set special English language skills as a criteria for enrollment. This criteria can be satisfied with a passing grade on the TOEFL Test (Test of English as a foreign language). The TOEFL®-Test evaluates the abilities of non-native speakers in the area of comprehension and use of the English language. The test is oriented on the style of language heard, spoken, and written in academic environments. The TOEFL® Test is an internationally accepted tool for evaluating English language abilities at the university level For more information, see TOEFL
