German in Academia

Workshop: German Language and Culture in the academic workplace - Avoid typical pitfalls in communication & collaboration

In every culture it is crucial to make a favorable impression and to show your competences and professionalism to your colleagues and your boss. But the manner to leave a good impression varies from culture to culture and depends on etiquette and correct linguistic usage.

This German language & culture workshop uniquely combines the skills required for you to be perceived as you want to be in the academic workplace: German language tuition, effective behavioral guidance, and the academic code of conduct in the sphere of Mensa, lecture room and laboratory will be discussed in detail.

To be successful in the world of academics you have to know the unwritten rules of German university life. How to address your professor, should I use "du" or "Sie" or "Herr Professor"? When should I say "Auf Wiedersehen" or "Tschüss"? Are there any dress codes? Which topics are suitable for small talk with colleagues?

Whereas the first part of the workshop focuses on German as a colloquial language in the academic context in the frame of meetings, business lunch and everyday life as a student or young professional at university, the second part concentrates on business etiquette, body language and behavior.
