Friction loss optimization at gaskets and bearings

The workgroup MEGT is working on the areas with friction losses of the existing machine as well as of the optimized one. Main focus is put on the creation of methods for loss estimation and their application on the existing problems. Furthermore suggestions for optimizations considering the friction losses will be made and the areas of loss will be investigated deeper. Finally the suggestions will be evaluated using an “investment effort/effectiveness”-analysis.

Project Objective

Objective of the sub-project is providing of methods and experimental results for friction loss optimization of bearings and gaskets in the mobile working machines. Finally an estimation of the potential for energy and resource savings through optimization of machine elements subjected to friction will be made.

Approach

In particular the following working steps have to be done:

  • Creation of an overview of the places of friction loss in a mobile excavator
  • Definition of main load types and load spectra in the places of friction loss
  • Invention of methods for estimation of the losses in bearing and gaskets in the mobile excavator
  • Creation of an overview with friction loss evaluation of bearings and gaskets
  • Estimation of the losses of selected components of the mobile excavator
  • Creation of “investment effort/effectiveness”-analyses of the optimized components
  • Creation of “investment effort/effectiveness”-analyses for alternative drive concepts from the other sub-projects considering friction losses
  • Estimation of the optimization potential

Core competences

One of the main competences of the Institute of Machine Elements, Gears and Transmissions (MEGT) is friction in bearings and gaskets.
