Welcome to
Transformation and
Digitalization of

Region & City

The aim of the potential area "Transformation and digitalization of regions and cities" is to bring together development paths of spatial planning from interdisciplinary perspectives in a structured research framework and to provide generalizable findings and innovative strategies for sustainable and crisis-proof spatial development in cities and regions on the basis of case study-based surveys.

Within the framework of joint projects and other projects of the PIs, it became clear that far-reaching spatial trends in the course of digitalization and transformation are confronted with central research questions, among others:

  1. What adaptation needs arise for the crisis-proof development of cities and regions with regard to the dimensions and interactions of transformation processes in social terms (including migration; ageing society), in ecological terms (climate change) and in economic terms (structural change) and how can this be operationalized with a view to resilience?
  2. How can spatial planning methods and procedures for cities and regions (formal and informal instruments and strategies as well as information and participation procedures) be designed more efficiently in view of challenges such as digitalization, but also the spatial implications of the polycrisis (economic crisis, geopolitical conflicts, climate crisis, energy crisis, Covid-19 pandemic)?
  3. What material and content-related approaches result from the design of the transformation and what qualification profile do experts need who could take on a leading role in the transformation process of spatial planning in cities and regions?

The research topics addressed by the potential area are based in particular on the RPTU research profile lines "Sustainable Development and Conservation of Livelihoods" and "Social and Digital Transformations".
