The Center for Optics and Materials Sciences (OPTIMAS) performs research about the interactions of light, spin (magnetism) and diverse forms of matter. It encompasses the full range of research topics, from basic to technically relevant to technology oriented, in physics, chemistry, and materials science.
The strategic goal of OPTIMAS is to further expand nationally and internationally recognized research and training structures at the University of Kaiserslautern. The center provides an interdisciplinary environment for photonics, spintronics, and molecular/magnetic functional materials including nanostructures. Thus, OPTIMAS provides the basis for various research programs. OPTIMAS members come from the University Departments of Physics, Chemistry, Mechanical and Process engineering, as well as Electrical and Computer Engineering. Additional partners are the Nano Structuring Center (NSC) of TU Kaiserslautern, the Institut für Oberflächen- und Schichtanalytik (IFOS, Institute for Surface and Thin Film Analysis) das Center for Material Characterization and Testing of Fraunhofer ITWM, the Photonik-Zentrum Kaiserslautern (PZKL), as well as the Institut für Verbundwerkstoffe GmbH (IVW, Institute for Composite Materials).
