Distinguished Lecture Series
The Spin+X Distinguished Lecture Series brings outstanding speakers to the Spin+X community during the semester.
The series comprise plenary talks of different key topics for the whole interdisciplinary consortium. Purpose of the event is to provide the community with different perspectives and promote the exchange of thoughts and ideas between experts, staff, and students.

"Hysteresis design of magnetic materials for efficient energy conversion"
Oliver Gutfleisch is a full Professor for Functional Materials at TU Darmstadt. His interests include new permanent magnets for power applications, solid-state energy efficient magnetic cooling, ferromagnetic shape memory alloys, magnetic nanoparticles for biomedical applications, and solid-state hydrogen storage materials with a particular emphasis on tailoring functional, structural and chemical properties on the nanoscale. Further foci are the resource efficiency on element, process and product levels as well as the recycling of strategic elements. He has published more than 400 papers in refereed journals. In 2017 he was awarded an EU ERC Advanced Grant (Cool Innov), in 2018 he received the Prize of the German Materials Society (DGM Prize 2018) and in 2020 he was elevated to IEEE Fellow. He is since January 2020 the speaker of the DFG Cooperate Research Center 270 (Sonderforschungsbereich) Hommage Hysteresis Design of Magnetic Materials for Efficient Energy Conversion. more
Prof. Dr. Uwe Bovensiepen

"Non-equilibrium dynamics of condensed matter in the time domain"
Uwe Bovensiepen obtained his PhD from the Freie Universität Berlin in 2000 for an experimental study of the para- to ferromagnetic phase transition in ultrathin magnetic films. After a short postdoc stay at the Fritz-Haber-Institute of the Max-Planck Society he started in the group of Martin Wolf at the Freie Universität Berlin to work on ultrafast dynamics in condensed matter with a focus on low dimensional systems and interfaces. In 2009 he became full professor at the Faculty of Physics, University of Duisburg-Essen and is currently the spokesperson of the Collaborative Research Center 1242. His main research interests are femtosecond magnetization dynamics, non-equilibrium dynamics of strongly correlated electron systems, and ultrafast electron dynamics in low dimensional systems. The activities are based on a variety of pump-probe experiments both table-top as well as at user facilities like synchrotron light sources and more recently also free electron lasers. more

"Ultrafast Spin Dynamics … there and back again"
Martin Weinelt obtained his PhD from the Technische Universität München in 1994 working in the group of Hans-Peter Steinrück and Dietrich Menzel on lateral interactions and band-structure formation in molecular adsorbates at surfaces. He spent two years at the Advanced Light Source in Berkeley as postdoc with Anders Nilsson, Joe Stöhr and Nils Mårtensson. In 1996 he became research assistant in the group of Thomas Fauster in Erlangen and started with time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. In the priority programme “Ultrafast Magnetization Processes” led by Burkard Hillebrands (2002 – 2008) he joined forces with Markus Donath to investigate spin-dependent decay and dephasing of image-potential states. In 2004 Martin Weinelt received a joint appointment as department head at the Max-Born-Institut and S-Professor at the Freie Universität Berlin. He became full professor at Freie Universität Berlin in 2011. His group works on pump-probe photoelectron spectroscopy with optical lasers and higher-order harmonic radiation as well as on X-ray spectroscopy at facilities like BESSY, FLASH and the European XFEL.
