German Language Proficiency

As an international program approx. 50% of the lectures are held in English, thus only a basic knowledge of German (Level A2, at Goethe-Insitut or ÖSD Center, in the Common European Frame of Reference for Languages) is required at the application deadline. However, for the application, English proficiency has to be proved by TOEFL (213 computer-based, 550 paper-based, 80 internet-based) or IELTS. For international students, an  Orientation Course including an advanced German Language course is part of the program.

Please note:
Mandatory subjects in this Master´s course are given in English. Elective subjects are provided in English and/or German. Students are required to take some courses in German.

As a precondition for application, you must have a minimum German proficiency level of A2. To understand a lecture given in German you must have a minimum proficiency level of B2 (a level of C1 is best.) The university offers German language courses to improve your language proficiency. The first course is included in the August orientation course. Subsequent courses are provided as evening courses during both the winter and summer semesters. After the first semester, you should have reached the minimum level of B2 to take elective subjects in German.

Please be aware that after your first year of studies, you will have to attend some classes in German. Therefore, we highly recommend your participation in the September / October orientation course, which will help you to continue your German lessons, to orientate yourself on the campus and in the region and to make friends from the start of your time in Kaiserslautern. You are required to pass a German language exam to prove your German proficiency no later than before the end of your first year at RPTU. This exam is available from October after the orientation class until the end of your first year, allowing you to complete this requirement as early as before classes start.
