German Language Proficiency
As an international program approx. 50% of the lectures are held in English, thus only a basic knowledge of German (Level A2, at Goethe-Insitut or ÖSD Center, in the Common European Frame of Reference for Languages) is required at deadline of application. However, for the application, English proficiency has to be proved by TOEFL (213 computer-based, 550 paper-based, 80 internet-based) or IELTS. For international students, a Orientation Course including an advanced German Language course is part of the program.
Mandatory subjects in this Master´s course are given in English. Elective subjects are given in English and German. At least you have to take some subjects in German.
As precondition for application you have to fulfill minimum German Level A2. To understand a lecture given in German you have to have minimum level B2, better C1. To get this we offer German language courses at the university. First one is included in the orientation course given in August every year. Subsequent courses are given as evening courses during winter and summer semester. This means that after first semester you should have reached minimum level B2 to take elective subjects in German.
Please be aware that during your studies (after the first year of studies) you will have to attend some classes in German. Therefore, we highly recommend your participation in the orientation course in September / October, both to continue your German lessons and to orientate yourself on the campus, in the region, throughout your studies and to make friends in Kaiserslautern from the very start. For no later than after your first year at TU Kaiserslautern, you will have to pass a German exam to prove your German proficiency. But, having passed this exam at the end of the orientation course, this obligation could be done already in October before university classes start.
