Accomodation in Kaiserslautern

Depending on how long you intend to stay, your financial situation and your personal preferences, the town of Kaiserslautern offers you a wide range of accommodations:

Student Residencies

The most inexpensive solution is to live in a residence hall. The Student Union of Kaiserslautern takes care of the letting and administration of rooms. All residence halls in Kaiserslautern are spacious, modern and low priced.

The characteristics of the rooms in our residence halls are:

  • Mostly single apartments (12- 25 m²) including kitchen unit and bathroom
  • Bedroom apartments with shared kitchen and bathroom (well furnished)
  • Location in the centre, close to the university, good bus services
  • Low price rent (from €230) including utilities
  • Common rooms washing machine, dryer, oven, vacuum cleaner etc.
  • Standard furnished rooms
  • Administration tasks (e.g. registration for electricity and water) are taken care of by the janitor.
  • Plenty of neighbours and friendly atmosphere

There are quite a few advantages associated with living in a residence hall. Unfortunately however, there are fewer rooms than students at the university. In Germany, it is not very common to have a campus system providing each student with a room in a residence hall upon enrolment.

We recommend to apply as soon as possible for a room in a residence hall. Otherwise, you might find yourself at the very end of a long waiting list.

Private Accomodation

Finding private rented accommodation for the period of your stay in Kaiserslautern is neither difficult nor expensive. However, finding and living in private accommodation is different from living in a residence hall.

Apartments for one person with kitchen and bathroom are about 16-25 m² large and cost about €290. This includes utilities, that is the costs for electricity, water, heating and waste collection. These utilities comprise a lump sum that is debited from your account once a month. At the end of the year, the estimated consumption is compared to your actual consumption of energy. The difference is debited or credited. Since the additional costs in Germany make up an average of 38% of the full rent at the moment, you can save money by using as little energy as possible. Here you will find some suggestions concerning economical energy consumption in daily life.

Keep in mind that additional costs -compared to residence halls - can arise from possibly paying an estate agent and from buying additional furniture.

Prices for a single room in a shared flat or Wohngemeinschaft start at about €230 per month. However, you share bath and kitchen with between two and five flatmates. If you are a sociable and outgoing person, you will love living in a shared flat, since you will rarely be alone and will have the chance to get to know all kinds of interesting people.

Guesthouse of the university

The Kaiserslautern University guest house is located on campus and offers temporary rooms and apartments to visiting academics and their families.

However, the duration of accommodation is limited to three months (students holding an Alexander von Humboldt scholarship may stay up to 12 months.) The rent, including utilities for a one-bedroom apartment is about €420 per month.

If you wish to apply for a room in a guesthouse, please contact your program advisor at the university.

Hotels, Flats & Youth hostels

There is plenty of short term accommodation. You can choose between hotels, holiday flats and guesthouse rooms online. The nearest youth hostel is located in Hochspeyer.
