It was after one of the shows of our recent play "Arsen und Spitzenhäubchen" ("Arsenic and old lace") last summer, when I got to know Larry Zani. He came to take a look at our performance of this american classic - though being staged in german language. He met me after the show and we started talking. As being involved in american-german relations as well as being a theater enthusiast, he suggested thinking about some sort of cooperation between our theater group and drama enthusiasts among the american community here in Kaiserslautern.

We agreed, that we could attract quite a conciderable audience by doing some english language project. American theater goers as well as english speaking students and members of the university would be given a chance to enjoy a theater performance in english language right around the corner at our university. On the other hand, we would be able to get into contact with some of the non german speaking theater people around in KL.

At first though, the whole thing started off pretty slowly. After meeting with Larry several times and discussing possible ideas and reading several english language plays, we finally decided to do the Neil Simon comedy "The Last of the Red-Hot Lovers". This play would provide us with a unique american flavour (New York comedy) we could try to work out and of course a good laugh. The latter was considered mandatory by us to make up for our accents, which we all feared to be threatening the atmosphere and authenticity of the performance. By the time we started our rehearsals, our group was composed of three brave german actors and actresses as well as one particularily brave non german speaking spanish actress - Elisenda, who took the chance to do some acting while studying here at our univerity. The other half of our group simultanously started on the german language version of the same play. Thanks here go to Sven Methner, who agreed on sacrificing his time to direct both versions.

So here we are with the first english language play ever to be staged by the university theater group in Kaiserslautern. Many thanks go to Larry for his great support, our brave actors and actresses for their great efforts in mastering their accents and daring to step in front of an audience to perform in a foreign language. Also we would like to thank all other people that helped us and got involved in this unusual endeavour.
